CHOOSE YOUR EMDR ALLIES FOR SUPPORT
Not all EMDR therapists use allies, but it’s a tool that I find very helpful. While in the preparation phase, my clients choose their team of EMDR allies.
Your allies are the people or figures, real or imaginary, that will be there to support you whenever you need them. You can choose your first-grade teacher, Obama, the Buddha, Jesus or your best friend from high school. It could be Yoda, Tyler Durden or the dog you had when you were 8.

BUILD YOUR DREAM TEAM OF ALLIES.
Your allies will be there with you to protect, to nurture or to give advise. They can be real or imaginary. They are your team of allies and they are always with you.
These are people or figures that inspire you with their wisdom. These can be teachers, professors, mentors, or spiritual figures like the Dalai Lama.
All those figures that you feel nurtured by when they are around you. (Grandmas are popular in this category.)
This is a person, a figure or an animal that makes you feel really safe. They have infinite strength and they are always there to protect you.
FEEL THEIR PRESENCE
When choosing your figures, you don’t have to imagine being nurtured or protected by them. All you need to do is to imagine your protective, wise and nurturing figures and feel their presence. By using your imagination, you will activate some neural circuits that will lead to the relaxation response. This is another way to help balance your nervous system that will be activated while you will be processing some memories from the past.
